The constitutional Court of the Russian Federation, since 2008 located in St Petersburg, reviews federal laws and statutory acts on conformity with the Russian Constitution, and provides interpretation of the constitution. The Court consists of nineteen judges appointed by the Federation Council on recommendation of the President of the Russian Federation. The court is composed of 2 chambers consisting of 10 and 9 judges.

Supreme Courts (Highest Instance)

The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation is the highest judicial instance on civil, criminal, administrative and other affairs, within the general jurisdiction. The court supervises the activity of the courts of general jurisdiction , including military and specialized federal courts. The court is appellate court for the lower courts including the supreme courts of the republics and the courts of the autonomous regions. The court consists of 123 judges.

The Supreme Arbitration Court exercises original jurisdiction over commercial disputes between the Russian government and commercial parties, the government and subjects of the Russian Federation, or between subjects of the Russian Federation.
