Supreme Courts (Highest Instance)
The Supreme Court in India is the highest judicial instance in India and final court of appeal in all criminal and civil cases.
The court has the original and exclusive jurisdiction to resolve disputes between the central government and one or more states and union territories as well as between different states and union territories.
The Court consitsts of 25 justices and one chief justice, appointed by the president, until age of retirement.

The High Courts are the appellate courts for the subordinate courts and have original jurisdiction on revenue matters.
Each High Court has powers of superintendence over all Courts within its jurisdiction.
Criminal cases are trialed by a jury.
There are 18 high courts in India.
The high court chief justices are appointed by the president after consulting with the chief justice of the Supreme Court and the governor of the state.

First Instance Courts
The District (zillas) Courts are the courts of first instance, subordinate to the authority of their high court. Jjudges are appointed by the governor in consultation with the state's high court.
